I am writing to inform you about an exciting opportunity for students who are interested in expanding their knowledge and engaging in thesis work during the summer at the Vulcano International Summer School (PETRAS Vulcano School 2024 – CRISP (unipg.it)), set to take place once again this year from June 12th to June 20th 2024.
Presently, I am seeking students interested in participating in Thesis work at Vulcano Summer School in thematic areas such as Computer Vision, Augmented and Virtual Reality, and Human-Computer Interaction. Both master's and bachelor's students approaching their thesis work are encouraged to apply. I aim to facilitate the attendance of 2 to 5 students from IU (subject to space availability), based in Europe and most preferably based in Germany. While knowledge or proficiency in programming (C++ or C#) is essential, applicants from any computer science-related discipline are welcome, provided they can contribute to the aforementioned thematic topics. Here's an overview of learning activities students can expect, apart from their thesis: • Attendance at lectures and seminars led by esteemed professionals covering various aspects of Planetology, Exploration, Terrestrial Analogs, Robotics, Astrobiology, Spectroscopy, Augmetend and Virtual Reality and more. • Hands-on training in GIS data collection using specialized equipment such as drones and 3D cameras, in support by experts from DLR-Optical Systems and University of Potsdam. • Opportunities for learning and networking during poster sessions with researchers and working groups. • Evening stargazing sessions facilitated by planetary scientists and experts. • A certificate of participation issued by DLR, signed by the organizing members. I would really appreciate if you could please forward this email to your students in relevant courses or if you know of any students who might benefit from this opportunity. Interested candidates are requested to contact Prof. Janki Dodiya at janki.dodiya@iu.org and submit their expressions of interest along with details about their enrolled courses. It is recommended to apply by mid-March atleast to be able to take advantages of funding support.
The cost of travel and accommodation ranges approximately from 500 to 800 euros. Early applicants may have the opportunity to apply for funding support from IU (approximately 500 euros) (However, the funding support is only possible if applied 6 weeks before the travel, otherwise the student requires to manage their own funding).
As one of the organizers of this year's school, I am delighted to collaborate with esteemed institutions including Deutsches Zentrum für Luft und Raumfahrt (DLR)/German Aerospace Centre, Stockholm University, University of Perugia, and Polytechnic University of Freiberg. The Vulcano Summer School, situated on Vulcano in the Eolian Islands, Italy, promotes multidisciplinary approach bringing together experts in volcanology, geophysics, astrobiology, planetary science, electronic/mechanical engineering, and computer science. This convergence offers a comprehensive understanding of the diverse skill sets essential to the planetary sciences community.
The summer school boasts a diverse array of learning activities, with highlights including the PETRAS PhD summer school (PETRAS Vulcano School 2024 – CRISP). This segment comprises a series of seminars led by experts and researchers across various fields within the multidisciplinary planetary sciences community. Apart from that scientific activities include working groups, researchers and students conducting equipment tests (example rovers), experiments and thesis work under this umbrella. Additionally, this year, the DLR School Lab will join us, providing selected young students with a unique opportunity to enhance their experience. In addition to scientific seminars, special lectures will cover education and STEM/MINT topics, along with a training seminar focusing on the skillset required for scientific publication writing.
Thank you for your attention, and we look forward to welcoming motivated students to The Vulcano International Summer School
